Mongla, July 14 (V7N) – The Bangladesh Navy has detained two Indian fishing trawlers and 34 fishermen for illegally entering Bangladesh’s maritime boundary and conducting unauthorized fishing activities in the Bay of Bengal. The incident occurred early Monday near the Fairway Buoy, close to the Mongla Port.

The Navy’s patrol vessel BNS Khalid Bin Walid intercepted the trawlers and detained the fishermen. Two other Navy ships — BNS Shaheed Akhtar Uddin and BNS Udommo — are escorting the seized trawlers to the naval base at Digraj, Mongla for further processing.

According to Md. Zahidul Islam, Senior Fisheries Officer of Mongla Upazila, the captured trawlers were carrying a significant quantity of fish, which will be auctioned off by authorities. Once the vessels and detainees reach shore, they will be handed over to Mongla Police Station for legal proceedings.

Multiple intelligence agencies have also confirmed the incident.

Legal action is underway, and a case will be filed under maritime boundary violation laws and illegal fishing regulations against the Indian nationals involved.

Officer-in-Charge, (OC) of Mongla Police Station, Md. Anisur Rahman, said, “We have received confirmation of the seizure of the Indian trawlers and the detention of the fishermen. Detailed information will be provided after their handover.”
