Dhaka, Aug. 2 (V7N) – The BNP Standing Committee has entrusted party Chairperson and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman with the responsibility of selecting the party's candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the BNP Standing Committee held at the party chairperson's office in Gulshan on Saturday (Aug. 1) night.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir disclosed the decision while briefing reporters after the meeting. Standing Committee member and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed also confirmed the development.
The meeting, chaired by Tarique Rahman, lasted for more than one and a half hours. It was attended by Standing Committee members Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Selima Rahman and Dr. A.Z.M. Zahid Hossain.
Besides the upcoming presidential election, the party's top policymakers also discussed the country's prevailing political situation and the BNP's organisational activities.
No further details regarding the party's prospective presidential nominee were disclosed following the meeting.
