Dhaka, Jan 10 (V7N) — The final number of seats to be contested by the Jamaat-e-Islami–led alliance will be announced within the next one or two days, said Nahid Islam, convener of alliance partner Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP).
He shared the information while speaking to reporters after a meeting with European Union (EU) Chief Election Observer Iverson Ijabs on Saturday.
Nahid Islam said the European Union is deploying a large election observation mission to Bangladesh, reflecting its interest in ensuring a free, fair, and credible election. According to him, EU observers have assured that they will carry out their duties impartially.
During the meeting, the NCP raised concerns regarding the lack of a level playing field in the ongoing election process. Nahid alleged that government officials are providing security support to a particular political party, which, he said, is sending the wrong message to both the media and the public.
He further expressed apprehension over the law-and-order situation, stating that the voting environment may deteriorate further if those responsible for the killing of Osman Hadi are not brought to justice.
At the same time, the NCP convener accused the Election Commission (EC) of bias. He alleged that the commission has validated the nomination papers of loan defaulters, raising questions about the neutrality and credibility of the electoral process.
The Election Commission has not yet responded to the allegations.
