Dhaka, Nov 11 (V7N) — Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has said that there can be no election without the legal foundation of the referendum and the July Charter, warning that no polls will be allowed in 2026 for those who reject the Charter.
He made the remarks while addressing a rally of eight like-minded parties, including Jamaat, at Paltan in the capital on Tuesday afternoon.
Dr. Shafiqur said that true democracy means upholding the will of the people, not of any particular party. “Victory will be of the people, not of any group,” he said, vowing to continue working to fulfill the people’s demands.
He also announced that Jamaat’s next program would be declared soon and called upon supporters to make it successful.
Other leaders at the rally alleged that those denying the need for a referendum were “speaking in the tone of Hasina.” They termed the rally a “milestone in national politics”, insisting that the July Charter must be implemented immediately and no election should be held without a referendum.
The rally, which began at 2 PM, raised five key demands, including holding a referendum in November, issuing a constitutional order to implement the July National Charter, introducing the proportional representation (PR) system, ensuring a level playing field, bringing perpetrators of atrocities and corruption to justice, and banning the Jatiya Party and 14-party alliance.
The participating parties included Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, Khelafat Majlis, Nezame Islam Party, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, Bangladesh Development Party, and the Jatiya Ganotantrik Party.
