Dhaka, Oct 10 (V7N) – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has demanded that the proportional representation (PR) system be confirmed before the signing of the July Charter on October 15. The party’s Secretary General, Mia Golam Parwar, emphasized that the PR issue should be decided through a referendum, saying, “This demand of the people cannot be ignored in any way.”
After Friday prayers on October 10, Jamaat-e-Islami organized a mass procession at the south gate of Baitul Mukarram Mosque to highlight a five-point demand, including fair elections.
Ghulam Parwar acknowledged that the PR system is not widely understood by the public, but asserted that most people in the country support elections under the PR system.
He also expressed concern that repeated attempts are being made to disrupt the trial of friends of fascism and that certain officials are being installed under pressure, undermining a level playing field. “If a level playing field is not ensured, there will be another controversial election,” he warned.
Criticizing one political party for lack of cooperation, he added, “Many want early elections but do not cooperate in reforms. Although the country is more important than the party, some parties are not showing this in action.”
