Dhaka, Sep 19 (V7N) – BNP Standing Committee member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain has said that as the upcoming national elections draw closer, some groups are launching movements and programs over proportional representation (PR). However, he argued that PR is not an effective step toward strengthening democracy.

Speaking at a conference in the capital’s Segunbagicha on Friday, Zahid Hossain said, “Many may want PR as part of their democratic rights. But the notion that it must happen is undemocratic. An imposed attitude can never be democratic.”

He further warned that efforts to push PR against public will could pave the way for dictatorship. “In the name of the people, some are trying to delay the elections by demanding PR. But attempting to impose a party agenda by labeling it as a people’s demand will not succeed. The ordinary citizens of this country will resist it,” he added.
