Dhaka, Sept 4 (V7N) - Activists from Gono Odhikar Parishad staged a protest at Paltan Intersection on Wednesday afternoon, chanting slogans such as “Not Delhi or Dhaka, only Dhaka,” “No truce, only struggle,” “Power belongs to the people, not the authorities,” and “VP Nur’s blood must not go to waste.”
Around 5:30 PM, the protesters blocked all four directions of the busy intersection, even burning tyres on the road, causing severe traffic congestion across Rampura, Mohakhali, Shahbagh, Gulistan, and Motijheel. Traffic returned to normal by approximately 6:00 PM when the activists dispersed.
They pressed three key demands:
Swift and impartial justice for the attack on their President, Nurul Haque Nur, and other party leaders.
Immediate resignation of the Home Affairs Adviser.
A ban on the political activities of the Jatiya Party and the 14‑party alliance.
During a brief address, General Secretary Md. Rashed Khan stated that the assault on Nurul Haque Nur was not a solitary event but a calculated attempt on his life—and, by extension, an attack on the people's uprising. He stressed the Home Affairs Adviser must be held accountable and step down immediately. He also advocated for banning the Jatiya Party and 14‑party alliance, accusing them of being aligned with fascist agendas.
Responding to the protest, Paltan Police Station Officer-in-Charge, (OC) Mahmudul Haque confirmed that the roadblock was orchestrated for the demonstration. He added that law enforcement remained at a safe distance, monitoring the situation.
