Teknaf, Sept 29 (V7N) – Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 2 lakh yaba tablets allegedly being smuggled from Myanmar into Bangladesh by a person posing as a fisherman in Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar. However, no one was arrested in connection with the seizure.
The drugs were recovered during a raid at Majorer Gher, a border area of the upazila, around 7am on Monday, September 28, by a patrol team of Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB).
Lieutenant Colonel Md Zahirul Islam, commanding officer of 64 BGB, said a special patrol team from Unchiprang Border Outpost spotted a man entering Bangladesh carrying a fish crate on his head while conducting a routine patrol.
When BGB personnel challenged him, the man dropped the crate and fled towards a nearby village.
The patrol team later searched the fish crate and found 20 packets containing 2 lakh yaba tablets. The tablets were wrapped in blue airtight packets and concealed inside khaki-coloured packages.
BGB personnel conducted searches in and around the area but found no other illegal goods.
Lieutenant Colonel Zahirul Islam said intelligence surveillance had been intensified to identify the suspected drug suppliers and others involved in the smuggling operation and bring them to justice.
“Anti-drug and anti-smuggling operations along the border will continue,” he said.
