Dhaka, May 15 (V7N) — Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain staged a demonstration on Wednesday in front of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) headquarters, demanding that he be installed as mayor. The protest escalated into a call for a continuous sit-in, which is set to begin at 9:00 AM today, Thursday.

Organized under the banner “City Hall Siege by the General Voters of Dhaka – Organized by: Citizens of the City,” participants began gathering in front of the Nagar Bhaban (City Hall) in Gulistan from various wards early Wednesday morning. Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the demonstrators held a human chain on the road outside the main gate of the city corporation building.

At around 10:00 AM, the main gate to the building was opened, and protesters entered the premises. A portion of the demonstrators sat on the main staircase of the building, continuing their protest from within. The sit-in lasted until around 2:00 PM.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that several leaders and activists from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its affiliated student and youth wings also joined the protest, lending visible political weight to the demonstration.

Protesters claim that Ishraque Hossain, who previously contested the mayoral election for Dhaka South, has widespread support among Dhaka’s residents and should be reinstated or recognized as the legitimate mayor. While the DSCC has not issued an official response, the call for continuous protest signals an escalation of political pressure from the opposition camp.

The developing movement appears to reflect broader dissatisfaction with the current city administration and is likely to draw increased attention in the coming days, especially as the sit-in begins.
