DHAKA, June 12, (V7N)— Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Md Shafiqul Islam Khan today said the city corporation is introducing modern equipment and technologies to strengthen waste management and make the capital cleaner.

In a statement, he said a modern and environment-friendly waste management system would be developed under the Aminbazar Landfill Expansion and Modernization Project through waste-to-energy generation.

Under the project, up to 42.5 megawatts of electricity will be generated daily by processing around 3,000 tonnes of solid waste, he said.

The administrator said initiatives have also been taken to procure modern compactor trucks, hook-lift trucks, and other vehicles to improve waste collection and transportation services.

To encourage waste segregation at source and ensure proper collection, DNCC has distributed 500 plastic bins on a pilot basis under its own management, including 250 green bins and 250 yellow bins. Besides, 50,000 polybags have been distributed, with the programme set to continue in phases.

He said sanitation workers would operate in night shifts alongside regular daytime operations across DNCC’s 10 zones to enhance cleanliness efforts.

Shafiqul Islam Khan said an open tender process is currently underway in 26 wards to expedite waste management activities, while steps have been taken to bring the conventional household waste collection van service under the direct management of the city corporation.

He added that measures are being implemented to ensure the full and effective use of all vehicles and equipment currently engaged in waste management operations.

The DNCC administrator further said major drainage channels would be cleaned to mitigate waterlogging, while floating waste is being removed from selected canals. The objective, he said, is to ensure quick cleaning of drains and keep key canals free from waste.
