Tehran, Jun 12 (V7N) – The state funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, will be held during the second ten days of the Islamic month of Muharram, according to Tehran Mayor Alireza Zakani.

Iranian state-affiliated media reported on Friday (June 12) that authorities have revised the schedule for the funeral ceremonies, which were previously expected to take place earlier in Muharram. According to Mayor Zakani, the decision was made to allow the observance of the first ten days of Muharram before the state funeral begins.

The funeral is now expected to take place between late June and early July, with large-scale public ceremonies planned in Tehran and other religious centers across the country. Iranian officials have previously indicated that millions of mourners are expected to participate in the events.

Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic of Iran for nearly 37 years, was killed in late February during a period of military confrontation involving Iran, the United States and Israel, according to Iranian authorities and multiple international reports. Initial funeral plans scheduled for early March were postponed because of the conflict and security concerns.

Iranian officials have stated that the funeral ceremonies will include events in Tehran as well as the holy cities of Qom and Mashhad before the final burial.
