Dhaka, Mar 18 (V7N) – Professor Dr. A.B.M. Obaidul Islam of the Department of Physics has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University. The appointment was made with the approval of the President and Chancellor under Article 11 (2) of the Dhaka University Order, 1973.

He officially assumed office on Tuesday afternoon, according to the university’s Public Relations Office Director Mohammad Rafiqul Islam. The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, formally handed over responsibilities to his successor.

The handover ceremony was attended by senior academic and administrative figures, including Treasurer Professor Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University Professor Dr. Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the National University Professor Md. Lutfar Rahman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University Professor Dr. Dil Rawshan Jinnat Ara Nazneen, and former Vice-Chancellor Emeritus Professor Dr. A.F.M. Yusuf Haider, along with deans, provosts, department heads, and other faculty members.

Speaking at a অনুষ্ঠানে held at the Professor Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom, the new Vice-Chancellor said his top priority would be to elevate Dhaka University’s position in global rankings and enhance its international reputation. He emphasized the importance of collective efforts to create a fair academic environment and a student-friendly campus.

“We want to move the university forward through proper planning and its effective implementation,” he said, urging all stakeholders to carry out their responsibilities with sincerity.

Professor Islam also expressed gratitude to his predecessor, Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, for his contributions, noting that ongoing initiatives in education, research, and infrastructure development would continue. He requested colleagues and well-wishers to refrain from offering floral greetings, sweets, or gifts.
