Pabna, Sept 21 (V7N) – Residents and classmates of 10-year-old Kamrunnahar Koli held a human chain and protest march in Pabna on Sunday, demanding a speedy trial and the maximum punishment for those accused of killing the child.
The protest was held in front of the Pabna District Council office in the morning. After the human chain, the protesters brought out a procession that passed through the court premises and surrounding roads.
During the protest, local residents and Koli’s classmates demanded that the trial of the two accused be completed without delay and that those found guilty receive the death penalty.
Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder. They are Mostafa Kamal, 55, son of the late Abdul Matin Pramanik of Kulunia village, and Yasin Ali, 21, son of the late Mohabbat Ali of Subarnashara village in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj. Yasin had been living as a tenant at Mostafa’s residence.
Police said the two suspects had confessed to their involvement in the killing.
According to Pabna Superintendent of Police Abu Ashraf, citing the investigation and the confessional statements of the accused, Koli, daughter of Kamal Pramanik of Kulunia village, went missing on the evening of Sept. 9.
Police said neighboring resident Mostafa Kamal and his tenant Yasin Ali allegedly lured the child to a bedroom behind Mostafa’s grocery shop. The two allegedly sexually assaulted her and later strangled her to death, fearing that the incident would become known.
After the killing, the suspects allegedly placed the body in a sack, tied two bricks to it and submerged it in a nearby abandoned pond, concealing it beneath bushes and vines in an attempt to dispose of the body.
Seven days after Koli went missing, police recovered her body from the pond near her home on the morning of Sept. 16. The body was found inside a sack.
The investigation is ongoing.
