Rajshahi, Aug 29 (V7N) — Rajshahi Central Park and Zoo has spacious animal enclosures, walking paths, a green environment, a pond and various recreational facilities for children. But it lacks the very animals that visitors come to see.

With no major attractions such as tigers, lions or elephants, many of the zoo’s large enclosures have remained empty for years. As a result, the zoo is gradually losing its appeal as a traditional zoological park.

Established in 1972, the approximately 33-acre Rajshahi Zoo has been managed by Rajshahi City Corporation since 1996.

As part of a modernisation project, the zoo was closed for nearly two years from 2021 for infrastructure development and beautification work. However, concerned citizens have raised questions about the felling of hundreds of old trees and the demolition of several animal enclosures to make way for a planetarium and guest house.

For children visiting the zoo, the main attractions are usually animals such as tigers, lions, elephants and deer. But the absence of larger animals has left many young visitors disappointed.

Visitors complain that although the premises are now aesthetically pleasing, its attraction as a zoo has declined considerably compared with the past.

“Previously, visiting the zoo meant walking from one enclosure to another and enjoying seeing different animals and birds. Now that there are no major animals, it feels more like visiting a park than a zoo,” said one visitor.

Rajshahi City Corporation Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton said it was not possible to operate the facility like a safari park because of its limited space.

“We are planning after considering what types of animals can be kept here, what kind of environment they require, and how their food, medical care and security can be ensured,” he said.

Dr AM Saleh Reza, head of the Department of Zoology at the University of Rajshahi, said a modern zoo required a long-term master plan.

“It is not enough simply to bring animals and keep them in cages. An environment suitable for their natural movement and behaviour, adequate food and water, medical care, security and trained staff must all be ensured,” he said.

Those concerned believe that alongside infrastructure development, the addition of a sufficient variety of animals and the creation of an animal-friendly environment could help Rajshahi Zoo regain its popularity as one of the city’s major recreational attractions.
