Rangamati, Aug 28 (V7N) — Newly appointed Rangamati Hill District Council Chairman Dipon Talukdar Dipu has pledged to transform the council into a model district council, following 17 years of political struggle, hardship, legal cases and attacks.
Dipon, who is also president of the Rangamati District unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), made the remarks on Thursday before formally assuming responsibility as chairman of the newly formed council.
“We believe Rangamati Hill District has enormous potential. With your cooperation, along with BNP leaders and activists and people from all walks of life, we want to build the Rangamati Hill District Council as a model district council. We want to work for the welfare of the people,” he said.
He said that after overcoming years of challenges and crises, the council now has an opportunity to work for the people. He pledged to work collectively with all council members and ensure that development reaches every part of the district, including its remote areas.
Earlier on Thursday afternoon, Chairman Dipon Talukdar Dipu and the newly appointed council members arrived at Tabalchhari, an entrance point to Rangamati, from Dhaka.
Thousands of BNP leaders and activists from different upazilas and remote areas of the district gathered with banners, festoons and flower garlands to welcome them. Large numbers of supporters lined both sides of the road and greeted the new chairman and members with flowers and music from a band party as they entered Rangamati town.
The chairman and members later received greetings from party activists and local residents at various locations before proceeding to the Rangamati District BNP office.
At the party office, District BNP General Secretary and newly appointed council member Advocate Mamunur Rashid Mamun introduced the new council members to party leaders and activists.
In a brief address there, Dipon said, “After 17 years of sacrifice, hardship, humiliation, deprivation, legal cases and attacks, the present government has recognised grassroots-level leaders and activists who faced persecution and made sacrifices in various ways by appointing them to different positions.”
He said he would work to uphold and enhance the party’s image while carrying out all possible activities for the welfare of the people in return for the responsibility entrusted to him.
“I want to work together with everyone in unity. I will ensure development reaches every corner of Rangamati and maintain continuity in development activities,” he added.
Dipon expressed gratitude to Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman for appointing him chairman of the district council. He also thanked Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Minister Saching Prue Jerry and State Minister Mir Helal.
The newly appointed chairman pledged to carry out overall development activities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, particularly Rangamati, following their advice and guidance.
Council members, officials and employees of the relevant authorities, journalists, party leaders and activists, and people from various professions attended the programme.
