Rangamati, Aug 28 (V7N) — The newly formed interim council of the Rangamati Hill District Council was welcomed amid a festive atmosphere on Thursday, with large numbers of grassroots activists gathering in the town to greet the new chairman and members.
The reception featured floral greetings, a band party, sweets and political slogans, as activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its affiliated organisations arrived in Rangamati from different upazilas.
On Aug 20, the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs issued a notification announcing the names of the new chairman and 14 members of the Rangamati Hill District Council. The newly constituted interim council formally assumed office on Thursday.
Rangamati District BNP President Dipon Talukdar Dipu has been appointed chairman. Among the members are District BNP General Secretary Advocate Mamunur Rashid Mamun, former District Chhatra Dal president Faruk Hossain Sabbir and central Jubo Dal leader Shashwata Chakma Rinku, along with leaders from different upazilas and affiliated organisations.
From the morning, BNP activists from different parts of the district gathered at the Rauzan-Betbunia area, one of the main entry points to Rangamati, to welcome the new chairman and council members. They later accompanied them in a motorcade to Rangamati town.
The activists welcomed the new council with flower petals, garlands, band music and sweets. The streets of Rangamati echoed with slogans including “Dipon Bhai, move forward” and “Long live BNP”.
The enthusiastic participation of a large number of activists turned the reception into a major political gathering.
For the first time, a member of the Khyang community has also been included in the district council. According to the government notification, the 14 members represent different areas and communities across Rangamati.
After assuming office, Chairman Dipon Talukdar Dipu expressed gratitude to the activists for their support and confidence. He also thanked the authorities concerned for appointing him chairman of the Rangamati Hill District Council.
He said the council’s main priority would be to work for the welfare of ordinary people in cooperation with party activists and the newly appointed members.
He added that the council would work collectively to meet people’s expectations, with particular emphasis on improving the living standards of hill communities, public welfare and necessary development initiatives in the region.
Later in the afternoon, the newly appointed chairman and members exchanged greetings with party activists at the Rangamati District BNP office, where supporters gathered in large numbers.
The appointment of the new council and the arrival of supporters from different upazilas kept Rangamati town in a festive mood throughout the day. The newly appointed council members were scheduled to formally take charge later in the afternoon.
