JHALOKATHI, May 24 (V7N): Two separate tragic incidents involving water bodies were reported in Jhalokathi district today, resulting in the drowning of a two-year-old toddler in Kathalia upazila and the discovery of a young man's body under suspicious circumstances in Nalchity upazila.
In the first incident, a two-year-old child named Md. Zubair Islam drowned after falling into a domestic pond in Amribunia village under Kathalia Sadar union around 10:00 am on Sunday. Family sources stated that the victim, who was the son of expatriate worker Md. Saiful Islam, wandered outside the residential quarters without the knowledge of family members and accidentally slipped into the pond located directly behind the homestead.
Following a frantic search, family members spotted the toddler floating unconscious in the water. Local Union Parishad (UP) Member Md. Faisal Ahmed Mithu confirmed that the child was immediately rescued and rushed to the Amua Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty medical officer officially declared him dead upon arrival. Kathalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Abu Naser Raihan confirmed that an accidental death case has been registered, and since the family raised no complaints, the body was handed over to them without an autopsy.
Meanwhile, in a separate and more alarming development in Nalchity upazila, police recovered the floating body of a 30-year-old youth from a pond in Nachonmohal village around 1:30 pm on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Aminul Islam Babu Talukdar, son of Alamgir Talukdar, hailing from the Kuralia area under Nachonmohal union.
Local residents first spotted the floating body in the pond situated directly in front of the local Roy Bari residential compound and promptly alerted law enforcement. A specialized team from the Nalchity Police Station arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and discovered several severe cuts and sharp injury marks on various parts of the victim's body.
Nalchity Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ariful Alam stated that the body has been sent to the district hospital morgue for a detailed autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. He added that the physical trauma marks strongly suggest foul play, and senior forensic detectives have launched an intensive investigation to determine whether the incident was a targeted homicide, emphasizing that definitive conclusions will be drawn once the full autopsy report and forensic evidence are processed.
