RAJSHAHI, MAY 23 (V7N) - A pall of gloom has descended over Ward No. 13 of Rajshahi city following the tragic drowning of a local madrasa student in the Kadirganj pond on Saturday afternoon.
The young student went missing around midday, prompting anxious family members to search various locations across the neighborhood. When initial searches proved unsuccessful, relatives suspected the child might have fallen into the open water body and immediately alerted the emergency services.
Upon receiving the distress call, a specialized diving team from the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot to launch a targeted underwater rescue operation.
As news of the child's tragic death spread, hundreds of local residents flocked to the site, where the atmosphere grew heavy with the wailing of grieving relatives.
Local community leaders and neighbors expressed sharp frustration over the incident, pointing out that such preventable accidents occur frequently across the city due to a complete lack of perimeter fencing and safety measures at open ponds and municipal water bodies. Residents have formally demanded that the local city corporation take immediate, effective structural measures to fence urban water reserves and protect young children from future drowning hazards.
The victim's body has been kept at the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue for standard procedural formalities before being handed over to the family for burial.
