Mar 14 (V7N) – A one-and-a-half-year-old child was killed after a private car driven by a naval officer lost control and fell into a roadside ditch in Rajapur upazila of Jhalakathi.
The accident occurred around 4:15 pm on Saturday near the BRAC office in Bagri Bazar area along the Khulna–Barisal highway.
Police said Lieutenant Commander Imtiaz Ahmed, a resident of Daulatkhan upazila in Bhola district and currently serving with the Bangladesh Navy in Barisal, was driving the private car from Mongla to Barisal with his family.
When the vehicle reached the Bagri Bazar area, he suddenly lost control of the car and it plunged into a ditch beside the road.
His one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Mehreema, who was also in the vehicle, sustained critical injuries in the crash.
Locals rushed to the scene and rescued the injured passengers before taking them to Rajapur Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared the child dead.
Lieutenant Commander Imtiaz Ahmed and his wife Rumana were also injured in the accident.
Rajapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazrul Islam confirmed the incident, saying police rushed to the scene after receiving information and took necessary measures.
