Rangamati, Feb 03 (V7N) — Rangamati University of Science and Technology (RUST) witnessed widespread unrest on Tuesday following the appointment of Mashiur Rahman as registrar, a move students claim places a controversial and corruption-accused individual in a key administrative position.

From 10:00am, students staged a sit-in protest in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s (VC) office, symbolically displaying “red cards” to express their strong opposition to the appointment. Protesters alleged that the appointee is currently under investigation on charges of corruption and irregularities, making him unfit for the role.

The campus echoed with slogans throughout the demonstration, including: “Red card to corruption,” “Red card to fraud,” “There is no place for the corrupt on this campus,” and “This campus will not shelter dishonest individuals.” The chants drew widespread attention, creating a charged atmosphere across the university grounds.

The sit-in was addressed by students Shams Shahriar, Mohammad Sayeed, and Rakibul Islam, while Zeeshan Ahmed moderated the programme.

Speaking at the protest, students said it was unacceptable for a public university to appoint a person as registrar when the interim government itself has ordered an investigation into allegations of corruption and fraud against him. They stressed that RUST should not become a refuge for individuals facing such accusations.

Tensions remained high on campus throughout the day. Movement near the VC office was restricted due to the protest, and several students reported disruptions to classes and academic activities. University authorities deployed additional measures to maintain order, with the proctorial team remaining on high alert.

At one point, the acting registrar, along with the proctor and assistant proctor, held discussions with the protesting students. During the meeting, the administration assured them that their concerns would be taken seriously. Officials stated that the university would not knowingly appoint any corrupt or controversial individual to administrative positions.
