Dhaka, Jan 21 (V7N) — Human rights organization Fortify Rights has urged the immediate closure of the Bhasan Char refugee camp, citing serious human rights concerns. The call was made during a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Wednesday (January 21) afternoon.

The Thailand-based organization’s 36-page report, based on over 100 interviews conducted over the past five years, claims that Rohingya refugees from Myanmar residing on the island are facing severe restrictions, which the group describes as “arbitrary detention.”

The organization’s director emphasized, “Being a refugee is not a crime. But the authorities are treating the refugees in ways that violate basic human rights and humanity.”

Fortify Rights called on the Bangladesh government and the international community to take immediate action to protect the rights of the Rohingya population on Bhasan Char and to ensure that their treatment aligns with international human rights standards.
