Pabna, Sept 11 (V7N) – Residents along the Ichamati River in Pabna staged a protest march on Wednesday demanding government intervention for land acquisition and compensation for legal landowners. The march was organized by the Committee for the Protection of Legal Settlers of the Ichamati River.

The demonstration began at the Shadhinota Chottor, led by freedom fighter Rafiqul Islam Bakul, and proceeded through major city streets before reaching the district commissioner’s office, where participants held a sit-in. Key speakers included Habibur Rahman Habib, convener of Pabna BNP; Advocate Maksudur Rahman Masud Khondakar, secretary; Anisul Haque Babu, joint convener; Nur Mohammad Masum Boga; and committee chairman Masudur Rahman Mintu.

Speakers emphasized that the residents’ ancestors have legally paid land taxes since the 1990s and hold multiple official records for their plots. They argued that while river preservation is important, forcibly evicting legal settlers is unjust. The protesters demanded fair compensation and proper government intervention to secure their properties.

At the conclusion of the demonstration, residents submitted a memorandum to the district commissioner outlining their demands.
