Dhaka, Sep 18 (V7N) – A Dhaka court on Thursday granted a five-day remand to controversial contractor Motazzerul Islam Mithu over allegations of embezzlement and money laundering through a syndicate in the health sector during the Awami League government.
Judge Sabbir Faiz of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court rejected Mithu’s bail application and approved the remand.
Mithu was arrested on the night of September 10 by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) and produced before the court the next day. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the investigating agency, initially sought a ten-day remand, while Mithu’s lawyer applied for bail. The court sent him to jail and scheduled September 18 for the remand and bail hearing.
Earlier, ACC Deputy Director Md. Saiduzzaman filed a case against Mithu for acquiring undeclared assets worth Tk 75 crore. During the Awami League government, multiple media reports highlighted Mithu’s alleged tender manipulation and money laundering activities in the health sector.
