Dhaka, Oct 07 (V7N)- Seven years have passed since the murder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad, a killing that sparked widespread outrage across Bangladesh. However, the legal proceedings in the case have yet to reach their final stage.
Abrar Fahad was beaten to death at BUET's Sher-e-Bangla Hall on the night of October 6, 2019.
The Detective Branch of police completed its investigation within 37 days and submitted the charge sheet to the court on November 13 of the same year.
On December 8, 2021, Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 delivered its verdict in the case. The tribunal sentenced 20 people to death and five others to life imprisonment.
The verdict followed a high-profile trial that drew significant public attention and renewed debate over violence and student politics on university campuses.
The High Court later upheld the death sentences and life imprisonment terms handed down by the trial court.
However, the judicial process has not yet been completed. The case remains pending before the Appellate Division, where appeals filed by the convicted individuals are awaiting disposal.
Abrar's murder became one of the most widely discussed cases involving violence at a university campus in Bangladesh and triggered demands for stronger measures to ensure student safety.
Seven years after the killing, the case remains in the appellate stage, with the final outcome still dependent on the proceedings before the country's highest court.
