Dhaka, Jun 02 (V7N) — India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has congratulated Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman on his election as President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Jaishankar conveyed his congratulations in a post published on his verified Facebook account on Tuesday.
In his message, the Indian foreign minister said, “Congratulations to Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman on being elected President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. I look forward to working closely with him to advance our common priorities and strengthen multilateral cooperation.”
The congratulatory message comes after Dr. Khalilur Rahman secured victory in the election for the UNGA presidency held at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
A total of 190 member states participated in the vote. Dr. Khalilur Rahman received 99 votes, while his closest rival, Andreas S. Kakouris of Cyprus, secured 91 votes.
Dr. Khalilur Rahman is set to assume the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he will oversee the proceedings of one of the world's most important multilateral forums.
The election is being regarded as a significant diplomatic achievement for Bangladesh and highlights the country's growing engagement and influence in international affairs.
