Dhaka, Feb 26 (V7N) – Myanmar’s Foreign Minister Than Shwe has congratulated Bangladesh’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman, expressing a strong commitment to develop bilateral relations and strengthen mutual cooperation between Dhaka and Naypyidaw.
In an unprecedented move, United League of Arakan (ULA) Chairman and Arakan Army (AA) Chief Than Mrat Naing also sent a congratulatory message to Dr. Khalilur Rahman. He emphasized the hope that, as Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Rahman would work to find realistic, sustainable, and effective solutions and foster a new path of friendship between Bangladesh and Arakan based on existing goodwill.
A senior official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the state news agency on Wednesday evening that these messages are unprecedented and reflect the confidence of both Myanmar and Arakan authorities in the new Bangladeshi government’s ability to resolve the Rohingya crisis through dialogue and regular communication.
Dr. Khalilur Rahman recently confirmed that Bangladesh is in contact with both the Myanmar government and the Arakan Army to address the Rohingya crisis.
Bangladesh is also engaging in intensive discussions with the United Nations and other influential countries to reach a quick, sustainable, and peaceful resolution to this long-standing issue.
The Rohingya have reiterated their demand for the right to return to their ancestral homeland in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, including during a multi-stakeholder dialogue in Cox’s Bazar in August 2025 and at the high-level meeting of the 80th UN General Assembly session on September 30, 2025.
The international community continues to recognize the importance of ensuring the Rohingya’s participation in determining their future and facilitating their return to Myanmar.
