Dhaka, Dec 24 (V7N)— The interim government has reaffirmed its strict stance against the Awami League, with Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam declaring on Wednesday that the party will not be allowed to participate in the upcoming national elections. Speaking after an Advisory Council meeting at the Foreign Service Academy, Alam stated that the party’s activities remain prohibited and it has no scope to contest the polls slated for February 12, 2026. This announcement follows months of suspension of the party's registration following the July-August 2024 uprising.

Addressing the high-profile murder of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, the Press Secretary confirmed that the case will be tried in a Speedy Trial Tribunal to ensure swift justice. The government also strongly condemned the recent lynching of Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh, emphasizing that the administration is taking all necessary steps to protect minority communities and uphold the rule of law. Alam noted that investigations are also progressing into recent attacks on media outlets, including the Daily Star and Prothom Alo, as well as various cultural institutions.

Regarding the homecoming of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, scheduled for Thursday, December 25, the Press Secretary mentioned that the government has extended all requested cooperation for his security. In a significant move for digital rights, the Advisory Council gave final approval to the Bangladesh Telecommunication (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025. This new law explicitly prohibits internet shutdowns under any circumstances, guaranteeing uninterrupted connectivity as a statutory right for the people of Bangladesh.
