Dhaka, Aug 18 (V7N)- A special ‘pink bus’ service has started operating on the streets of Dhaka to ensure safer and more comfortable public transport for women. The service, launched by the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC), will have women passengers, drivers and conductors.
The service was officially inaugurated at the BRTC Dhaka Truck Depot in Tejgaon on Tuesday (August 18).
Initially, 10 buses will operate on several important routes across the capital. The routes include Notunbazar-Motijheel, Taltala-Motijheel, Demra-GPO, Mirpur-10-Motijheel, Mirpur-12-Motijheel and Mohammadpur-Motijheel.
A pink bus service will also operate between Abdullahpur and Motijheel, while buses will run on the airport route from Gazipur.
According to BRTC, the initiative is aimed at providing women with a safer and more comfortable travel environment on public transport.
The buses will be operated entirely by women, including both drivers and conductors, creating employment opportunities and encouraging greater participation of women in the transport sector.
The initiative is not limited to Dhaka. BRTC also plans to operate the special women-only bus service in Bogra and Chittagong.
BRTC officials hope the initiative will help reduce the difficulties faced by women while travelling on crowded public transport and contribute to improving their safety and mobility.
