Dhaka, Dec 13 (V7N): Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed will deliver his farewell address to senior judicial officers serving in district courts across the country tomorrow, Sunday (December 14), ahead of his retirement later this month.
According to a press release, an important session has been scheduled at the Supreme Court Auditorium at 3:00 pm, where the Chief Justice will address district judges, metropolitan sessions judges, chief judicial magistrates, and chief metropolitan magistrates from across Bangladesh. This will be his final address to district-level judicial officers before stepping down from office.
Under Article 96(1) of the Constitution, judges cannot hold office after attaining the age of 67. Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed was born on December 28, 1958, and will complete the constitutional age limit on December 27, marking the end of his tenure.
A former student of Dhaka University, Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed obtained a first-class law degree from Wadham College, Oxford University. He later earned both his Master’s degree and PhD from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in the United States.
Before joining the judiciary, he worked with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as an immigration law expert. He began his legal career as an advocate at the Dhaka District Court in 1984 and was enrolled at the High Court Division in 1986.
Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed was appointed as an Additional Judge of the High Court on April 27, 2003, and became a Permanent Judge two years later.
He is the son of renowned lawyer and former Attorney General Barrister Ishtiaq Ahmed, who also served twice as an advisor to the caretaker government, and Dr. Sufia Ahmed, a distinguished language movement veteran, Ekushey Padak recipient, and the first female National Professor of Bangladesh.
