Dhaka, Nov 28 (V7N) — India is currently reviewing Bangladesh’s request to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was recently convicted in the July genocide case, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said in a Facebook post today (Friday). He added that the extradition process is expected to begin with former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, also a convicted accused in the case.
In his verified Facebook post, Shafiqul Alam wrote that he believes Sheikh Hasina, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and other Awami League leaders accused in the July incidents will ultimately have to face trial in Bangladesh. According to him, India has already started examining Dhaka’s formal request for Hasina’s extradition.
“We know that Hasina has strong supporters. Nevertheless, I am increasingly beginning to believe that Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, widely known as the ‘Butcher of Dhaka,’ will be extradited to Bangladesh very soon to face trial,” he stated.
Shafiqul Alam wrote that as more information comes to light about the alleged crimes committed during Hasina’s nearly 16-year rule, Kamal’s role in disappearances and the July massacre will draw increasing global media attention.
He further emphasized that no amount of money or influence will allow Kamal or other accused Awami League leaders to evade justice indefinitely. “If we, as a nation, remain steadfast in ensuring justice for the victims of the July massacre and all human rights violations committed during Hasina’s tenure, it will become increasingly difficult for those responsible to avoid the consequences. It will start with Kamal — then one by one,” the Press Secretary wrote.
