Rajshahi, Aug 23 (V7N) – Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin stated that the proportional representation (PR) system is not included in the constitution, and the Election Commission cannot implement it beyond legal limits. “If the law changes, then the vote will be held under the PR system,” he clarified.
He made the remarks during a meeting with election officials of the Rajshahi region at Lok Admin Bhaban on Saturday, ahead of the 13th national election scheduled for February.
Regarding the Awami League, the CEC said that the party’s activities remain restricted pending trial proceedings. “There has been no verdict yet. If a verdict comes regarding the Awami League, the commission will take necessary decisions,” he added.
The Chief Election Commissioner also detailed preparations for the upcoming election. Voter lists have been updated, and a draft of the electoral boundary delimitation has been published, with hearings scheduled from Sunday to Thursday. He emphasized that irregularities like occupying polling stations or using weapons will lead to invalidation of votes, and the army will be deployed—not the striking force—to maintain law and order.
He further mentioned that 5,700 Election Commission officials have been assigned responsibilities, and those involved in irregularities in previous elections will not be retained.
Addressing concerns about government pressure, Nasir Uddin said, “The current government has not pressured the election. If it does, I will resign and will not remain in my position.”
