Dhaka, Aug 19 (V7N) – Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman has urged members of the Bangladesh Army to remain patient and professional in the face of ongoing propaganda on social media targeting the force and its members.
Speaking at the Officers’ Address program at Dhaka Cantonment on Tuesday morning, the Army Chief said, “Various people are spreading such propaganda to protect their interests. Instead of reacting immediately, it is better to maintain professionalism. All these crimes are being properly recorded, and appropriate legal action will be taken against those responsible at the right time.”
The event was attended by senior officers in person, while others from cantonments across the country and UN missions joined virtually. In the first session, the Army Chief spoke for 38 minutes, followed by a one-hour question-and-answer session with officers.
General Waqar-uz-Zaman reminded the army personnel of their crucial role in the country. “The people of Bangladesh look up to you as the future of the nation. You must be inspired by patriotism and uphold the chain of command,” he said, adding that the people would always remain grateful to the army for its historic contributions.
On the upcoming national elections, the Army Chief reiterated that the date had already been announced and that the government was determined to hold the polls on time. “All members must be prepared to perform their duties impartially and in accordance with the law,” he emphasized.
He also cautioned against spreading misinformation about alleged misconduct by army members. “According to army laws and customs, wrongdoings are judged through proper investigation. Rushing to judgment without sufficient evidence can lead to mistakes. Evidence must be collected properly before judicial action is taken,” he said.
General Waqar-uz-Zaman further directed members to:
-
Stay away from political activities and drugs.
-
Avoid unnecessary harm to civilians during operations and interrogations.
-
Take preventive measures to reduce vehicle accidents.
-
Address the rising trend of suicides within the force.
-
Pay attention to family welfare and ensure children are raised with proper social and religious values, while remaining vigilant against drug abuse and behavioral issues.
Concluding his address, the Army Chief noted that despite attempts by local and foreign groups to spread disinformation, the unity and professionalism of the Bangladesh Army had thwarted such efforts.
