Dhaka, May 29 (V7N) — Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has said his appointment was not a coincidence, but a result of the people's desire for a reformed and just judicial system. Addressing a gathering at the Supreme Court Auditorium on Wednesday afternoon, he noted that people across the country—from Ramna to Shahbagh, from Suhrawardy Udyan to TSC—are united in their call for justice.

"I have not been given this responsibility by accident," the Chief Justice said. "It is a reflection of the people’s will to restructure the judicial system and ensure justice prevails in Bangladesh."

Honored by Oxford University

The occasion was a felicitation event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association, celebrating the Chief Justice's recent recognition by Wadham College, Oxford University, which awarded him a lifetime Honorary Fellowship for his outstanding contribution to the protection of law, justice, and human rights in Bangladesh.

Senior justices of the Appellate Division, the Attorney General, the President of the Bar Association, and many distinguished members of the legal community were present to mark the occasion.

A Call for Shared Responsibility

Chief Justice Refaat Ahmed used the moment to urge members of the legal profession to actively support the ongoing judicial reforms, saying, “If we want lasting justice, we must all take responsibility.”

Symbol of National Judicial Dignity

Other speakers at the event praised the Chief Justice’s leadership following the July uprising, highlighting his role in re-establishing public trust in the judiciary. They described the Oxford honor not just as a personal accolade, but as a symbol of the global recognition of Bangladesh’s judiciary.

“This is not just an award for an individual. It is a recognition of the dignity and commitment of the judiciary of Bangladesh,” said one senior lawyer.
