Teknaf, Sept 30 (V7N) – The Coast Guard rescued 13 fishermen from a fishing boat that became stranded after its engine broke down in the deep sea south of Saint Martin’s Island in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, media officer of the Coast Guard, confirmed the rescue on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Coast Guard, the fishing boat FV Rifat left Teknaf on Friday, Sept 25, carrying 13 fishermen to catch fish in the sea.
After completing their fishing activities, the boat was returning to shore around 4pm on Monday, Sept 28, when its engine broke down in the deep sea south of Saint Martin’s Island. The boat subsequently drifted in the sea.
One of the fishermen called the Coast Guard’s emergency hotline 16111 and sought assistance.
After receiving the call, the Coast Guard launched a rescue operation. The patrol vessel BCGS Syed Nazrul, which was operating in the area, headed to the location.
The disabled fishing boat was located about 12 nautical miles south of Saint Martin’s Island, and all 13 fishermen were rescued alive.
The rescued fishermen were provided with first aid and necessary food before being handed over to the boat’s owners along with the fishing boat.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said the Coast Guard’s emergency rescue operations would continue to assist fishermen who encounter difficulties at sea.
