COX'S BAZAR, Aug 06 (V7N) — An eight-year-old Rohingya child was killed in a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall at a refugee camp in Ukhiya, while two additional shelters were damaged in separate landslides on Wednesday, camp officials and local representatives said.
The fatal incident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. in Block F/5 of Camp 13, where a hillside collapsed onto a family shelter during persistent rainfall.
The victim, identified as Nunu Zia, 8, son of Jomir Hossain, was trapped beneath the debris. Local residents rescued the child and rushed him to a nearby camp hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Syed Karim, a Majhi (community leader) of Camp 13, confirmed the death and said arrangements were underway for the child's burial with approval from the camp authorities.
Earlier in the day, at approximately 2:10 p.m., separate landslides struck Blocks M-8 and M-32 of Camp 20 following continuous heavy rain.
The incidents rendered two refugee shelters uninhabitable, but no injuries were reported.
The affected shelters belonged to residents identified as Md Saber of Block M-8 and Halima of Block M-32. Following the incidents, both families were relocated to nearby shelters and relatives' homes as a precaution.
Continuous rainfall has significantly increased the risk of landslides across several Rohingya camps in Ukhiya, raising concerns among humanitarian workers and camp authorities.
Officials said families living in high-risk areas are being warned about potential landslides, while relocation efforts to safer locations are continuing where necessary.
