JHALOKATHI, July 28 (V7N) – A patient suffered a broken leg after an ambulance carrying him to Dhaka veered off the road and plunged into a roadside ditch in Jhalokathi on Monday morning, police said.
The accident occurred in the Raipur area along the Barishal–Jhalokathi regional highway, confirmed Nalchity Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Touhiduzzaman Sohag.
According to police and local sources, the privately operated ambulance had left Jhalokathi Sadar for Dhaka with the patient on board when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The ambulance crashed into a roadside tree before being thrown into a ditch.
Local residents, along with police, rescued the patient and his accompanying family members and took them to Jhalokathi Sadar Hospital for treatment.
The patient's nephew, Matin Rahman, said his uncle, Fazlul Haque, travels to a hospital in Dhaka every month for regular medical check-ups.
"He was on his way to Dhaka for his scheduled treatment when the accident occurred. He suffered a broken leg in the crash. After receiving initial treatment at Jhalokathi Sadar Hospital, arrangements are being made to transfer him to Dhaka by another ambulance," Rahman said.
Fazlul Haque is a resident of the Palbari area in Jhalokathi Sadar.
Confirming the incident, OC Touhiduzzaman Sohag said efforts were underway to recover the damaged ambulance from the ditch. He added that legal procedures related to the accident were in progress.
