Rangamati, Dec 30 (V7N) — A woman was killed in a wild elephant attack in Kaptai upazila of Rangamati district on Monday night, local officials and forest authorities said.
The incident occurred at around 9:30 pm on Monday in the Sitarghat Atash Bagan area of Ward No. 9 under Wagga Union in Kaptai upazila, along the Chattogram–Kaptai road. According to local sources, the victim was believed to be mentally unstable and was approximately 50 years old.
Kaptai Range Officer of the Chattogram South Forest Division, Omar Faruk Swadhin, said the location is a regular movement corridor for wild elephants. He explained that a herd of elephants was passing through the area at night when the woman came in front of them. She was trampled by the elephants and died on the spot.
Local Union Parishad member Md Sarwar said the identity of the deceased could not be confirmed immediately. Following the incident, panic spread among residents in the surrounding area.
Upon receiving the information, police from Kaptai Police Station rushed to the scene. Officer-in-Charge Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan Rubel confirmed the woman’s death due to a wild elephant attack and said that necessary legal procedures would be completed.
Forest officials noted that wild elephant movement is frequently reported in Kaptai and nearby areas, posing an ongoing risk to local residents. Authorities have urged people to remain cautious, especially during nighttime hours in elephant-prone zones.
