Feni, June 29 (V7N) — A tragic accident occurred on Saturday evening in the Godown Quarter Railgate area of Feni city when a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw became trapped on the railway track and was struck by the Chattala Express train, resulting in the deaths of Hafizul Islam, 42, and his mother Fatematuz Johra, 62. The auto-rickshaw driver sustained injuries and has been taken into police custody.
Eyewitnesses reported that at approximately 7:30 p.m., the Chattala Express, traveling from Dhaka to Chattogram, collided with the auto-rickshaw that was stuck on the railway line due to heavy traffic congestion. The impact caused severe damage to the vehicle, seriously injuring all three occupants.
Hafizul Islam was a resident of Pathannagar village in Pathannagar Union, Chhagalnaiya Upazila, Feni, and worked as a teacher at a local educational institution.
The injured were rushed to Feni 250-bed General Hospital. Hafizul Islam was pronounced dead on arrival, while his mother was referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital due to critical injuries but died en route. The driver is currently in police custody.
Rail gatekeeper Babu stated, “I closed the gate at 7:20 p.m., but heavy traffic on the opposite side caused congestion. The auto-rickshaw got stuck on the tracks, and despite repeated attempts, it could not be moved. Although I signaled the train to stop, the distance was too short to prevent the collision.”
Dr. Raihan Uddin of Feni General Hospital confirmed that two severely injured victims were admitted, one of whom died before arrival. The other patient suffered critical head and leg injuries and was referred to a specialized hospital for further treatment.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shamsuzzaman of Feni Model Police Station confirmed the fatality and injuries, adding that the deceased’s body is kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy. Police have visited the site and will proceed with legal action pending any complaints.
