Washington, Oct 09 (V7N)- The United States has imposed sanctions on 17 oil tankers allegedly linked to Iran's oil exports, as Washington continues efforts to restrict Tehran's access to international energy markets.
The US Treasury Department said the vessels were associated with Iran's so-called “shadow fleet,” which Washington accuses of transporting Iranian oil to generate revenue for the country's economic and military activities.
The sanctions could complicate financial transactions, insurance coverage and international trade involving the targeted vessels and associated entities.
Shipping companies, insurers and financial institutions that conduct business with sanctioned entities may face restrictions under applicable US sanctions rules.
However, the practical impact of the measures will depend on how other governments, businesses and international shipping operators respond to the new restrictions.
The move could also add uncertainty to global oil markets, particularly if the sanctions affect shipping arrangements or the movement of Iranian crude.
The latest action underscores Washington's continued use of economic sanctions to pressure Tehran over its oil trade and broader policy disputes.
