Washington, Oct 09 (V7N)- US President Donald Trump has said the United States will not attack Iran before the November 3 midterm elections, claiming that Washington and Tehran are engaged in productive talks.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the United States would refrain from attacking Iran before the elections, while warning that sanctions against Tehran would remain in full force.
“We will not attack Iran at any time before the midterm elections in the United States on November 3,” Trump wrote, adding that the two sides were holding productive discussions.
Trump also claimed that record volumes of oil were passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy supplies.
According to the US president, 22 million barrels of oil had moved through the strait since Wednesday. He further claimed that none of the oil originated in Iran or was destined for the country.
Trump reiterated that Iran would not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, maintaining Washington's longstanding position on Tehran's nuclear programme.
The remarks come amid continued tensions following the outbreak of war involving the United States, Israel and Iran on February 28. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks across the region, while disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz heightened concerns over global energy supplies.
A memorandum of understanding brokered by Pakistan and Qatar was signed in June with the stated aim of ending the conflict and paving the way for further negotiations. However, implementation has reportedly stalled amid disagreements over security arrangements and navigation through the strategic waterway.
Trump's latest statement signals a declared pause in the prospect of a US attack before the midterm elections, while leaving sanctions and the broader diplomatic dispute unresolved.
