Riyadh, Oct 05 (V7N)- The Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen's internationally recognized government has pledged continued military backing for government forces as they seek to regain territory held by the Houthi group and restore state authority.
Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki said the coalition would continue providing military support to Yemeni government forces in their efforts to restore state institutions and confront the Houthis.
His remarks came as fighting has sharply intensified across Yemen following the collapse of a fragile ceasefire and a new government offensive against Houthi-held areas. Yemen's Presidential Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi has ordered military forces to begin operations aimed at extending state authority across the country.
Al-Maliki has also condemned recent Houthi attacks, including strikes and attempted attacks involving Saudi territory and maritime routes around the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
He said Saudi Arabia would continue taking measures to protect its security and sovereignty and to support regional and international security.
The renewed fighting follows a period of relative calm after the UN-brokered truce in 2022. The Houthis have made significant advances along parts of Yemen's Red Sea coast and around the Bab al-Mandeb, while Saudi-backed government forces have launched counteroffensive operations.
The Saudi-led coalition said on Sunday that its forces had conducted dozens of operations against Houthi positions and reinforcements. Yemeni government forces have also reported extensive strikes against Houthi targets as fighting continues around Taiz and other strategic areas.
The escalation has also increased concerns over maritime security in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb, a major international shipping route. Saudi Arabia has faced repeated Houthi attacks on its territory and infrastructure during the latest escalation.
