Washington, Sep 28 (V7N)- US President Donald Trump has praised what he described as “tremendous progress” following his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week.
Speaking to reporters aboard Marine One, Trump said the meeting with Xi had been highly productive and that positive developments were already emerging from the talks.
“Our nation has won,” Trump said, describing the meeting with Xi as “incredible” and saying the discussions lasted a long time.
Xi concluded his three-day state visit to the United States on September 25 after holding talks with Trump in Washington. The White House said the two leaders agreed to build a constructive relationship of strategic stability based on respect, fairness and reciprocity.
The leaders discussed a range of global and regional issues, including Russia, North Korea and Iran. According to the White House, they agreed that Iran should never possess a nuclear weapon and that no country or institution should be allowed to impose tolls on international waterways.
The waterway position comes as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been significantly disrupted amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
The summit also produced agreements covering trade, investment and technology. Washington and Beijing reached consensus on more favorable tariff treatment for $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction and established mechanisms for continued economic cooperation.
Trump and Xi also agreed to maintain communication and continue working-level engagement on issues affecting bilateral relations.
At the conclusion of the visit, Trump said the two countries had made “tremendous strides” and described the discussions as positive for both sides.
