New York, Sep 21 (V7N)- US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz has said Iran will not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, while stressing that Washington’s door remains open for renewed negotiations with Tehran.
In a post on X, Waltz said President Donald Trump remains determined to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and will continue pursuing a policy of “maximum pressure” to achieve that objective.
Waltz said Iran could return to the negotiating table if it does so “in good faith,” signaling that the US continues to leave room for diplomacy amid the ongoing conflict.
The US envoy made the remarks after speaking at an Al-Monitor Live event in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. He described the current US-Israel conflict with Iran as part of a confrontation that has continued for decades.
At the event, Waltz said the Trump administration wants to prevent Iran from using a potential nuclear capability to exert pressure internationally or threaten control over strategic waterways, including the Strait of Hormuz.
He also said the Trump administration believes continued economic and diplomatic pressure is working in Washington’s favor. In a separate CNN interview, Waltz said the administration would maintain maximum pressure on Iran’s economy.
Iran has consistently denied seeking nuclear weapons and maintains that its nuclear programme is intended for peaceful purposes.
In 2015, Iran reached a nuclear agreement with the United States and other world powers that imposed restrictions on its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. Trump withdrew the United States from the agreement in 2018 during his first presidential term, after which tensions between Washington and Tehran intensified.
Waltz’s latest remarks come as the UN General Assembly convenes in New York, with the possibility of renewed US-Iran diplomatic contacts remaining a major issue amid the continuing conflict.
