New Delhi, Aug 9 (V7N) – An Air India pilot whose flight plunged approximately 300 feet in severe turbulence on August 4 is undergoing a "confirmatory" psychoactive drug test after an initial screening returned a non-negative result .
The Airbus A320, operating flight AI2379 from Phuket, Thailand, to New Delhi, encountered severe turbulence and suddenly lost altitude mid-cruise before stabilizing and landing safely . The aircraft was carrying 137 passengers and 8 crew members .
According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, at least 17 people—including 4 cabin crew members and 8 passengers—were admitted to hospitals after landing in Delhi . Some crew members suffered spinal and neck injuries .
Following the incident, both pilots underwent a standard "psychoactive substance screening test." The Pilot-in-Command's test "indicated a result requiring confirmatory testing," and samples have been sent to a designated lab for further analysis . Air India confirmed the test was conducted but stated it has not yet received the results .
The incident has been classified as a "Serious Incident" and is under investigation by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Both pilots have been removed from the flying roster pending the investigation's outcome . The ministry has committed to taking appropriate action based on the confirmatory test results and the investigation's findings .
