Washington, Aug 07 (V7N)- US President Donald Trump has signed two executive orders aimed at tightening the application of birthright citizenship and curbing what his administration describes as "birth tourism."
The orders were signed on Thursday, weeks after a US Supreme Court ruling related to legal challenges over birthright citizenship.
According to the White House, the new directives call for stricter enforcement of citizenship rules in specific circumstances and instruct federal agencies to take additional measures against so-called birth tourism.
The administration said the measures target individuals who travel to the United States primarily to give birth so their children may obtain US citizenship. Officials said agencies have been directed to strengthen enforcement against such practices.
The White House also said the executive orders address categories of individuals whose children would not qualify for citizenship under the administration's interpretation of existing law and policy.
Under long-standing US law and practice, children born in the United States to accredited foreign diplomats are already excluded from automatic birthright citizenship because their parents are not considered subject to US jurisdiction. The scope and legal effect of the new executive orders, including any changes affecting other categories of people, are expected to face legal scrutiny.
The executive orders are likely to become the subject of further court challenges as the administration seeks to reshape US immigration and citizenship policies.
