Tokyo, Aug 07 (V7N) — Japanese police and immigration authorities have detained 11 foreign nationals during a joint operation in Kamisu City, Ibaraki Prefecture, over allegations of residing in Japan without valid immigration status.
According to local media reports, the operation was conducted on Thursday at an apartment building in the Ota area of Kamisu City by the Ibaraki Prefectural Police in cooperation with the Tokyo Regional Immigration Services Bureau.
Authorities searched the building and found 11 foreign nationals staying in six separate rooms. The individuals were taken into custody for further investigation.
The immigration authorities said that 10 of the detainees are Thai nationals, while one is a citizen of Laos. Initial investigations found that none of them appeared to have valid visas or legal residency permits required to remain in Japan.
Officials said the detained individuals are now subject to legal and administrative procedures to determine the details of their immigration status and any possible violations of Japanese immigration laws.
Authorities launched the operation after receiving information about possible cases of unauthorised foreign residency in the area. Investigators are examining the individuals’ entry into Japan, the circumstances of their stay, and whether they were involved in any unauthorised employment activities.
Japan has recently strengthened measures to address immigration violations, with police and immigration agencies increasing joint inspections in various regions to identify and investigate suspected cases of illegal residency.
The authorities said further action will be taken based on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
