Jerusalem, Jun 21 (V7N) – An Israeli soldier was killed and at least 13 others were wounded after Hezbollah fighters launched an attack on Israeli forces during an operation targeting an underground tunnel in southern Lebanon, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Sunday.

According to the IDF, the incident occurred on Saturday while Israeli troops were conducting a search operation inside a tunnel network in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah fighters reportedly launched a sudden assault, triggering intense clashes between the two sides.

One Israeli soldier was killed in the fighting, while 13 others sustained injuries. The wounded were evacuated by military helicopters to hospitals across Israel, with officials saying several remain in critical condition.

The latest casualties came just a day after another deadly confrontation along the Lebanese border. On Friday, four Israeli soldiers were killed and at least five others were injured in a separate Hezbollah attack, according to Israeli military officials.

The continued exchanges of fire highlight the fragile security situation along the Israel-Lebanon border despite a preliminary 60-day ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States and Iran last Wednesday.

Although the ceasefire was intended to reduce regional tensions, Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah's armed resistance have continued, raising concerns over the risk of further escalation.

The Israeli military has vowed to continue its operations against Hezbollah positions, while the Iran-backed Lebanese group says it will maintain resistance against Israeli forces operating inside Lebanese territory.
