Tehran, May 26 (V7N)- Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that it shot down a sophisticated US MQ-9 Reaper drone that allegedly entered Iranian airspace during a fragile ceasefire period.
The claim was reported by Iranian state media on Tuesday (May 26), though it has not yet been independently verified by US authorities.
According to the IRGC, the action was taken in response to what it described as a violation of Iranian airspace, and it warned that Tehran reserves the right to take “legal and certain” retaliation against any breaches of the ceasefire agreement by the United States.
The announcement came shortly after reports of a US military air and missile strike in southern Iran, which Washington described as a “self-defensive” operation.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesperson Capt. Tim Hawkins said the strike targeted Iranian forces in southern areas, including speedboats allegedly preparing to lay mines and several missile launch sites. He said the operation was conducted to protect US ground and naval assets in the region.
Tensions between the two sides have remained high despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing the situation, with both Washington and Tehran trading accusations of ceasefire violations.
