Beijing, May 14 (V7N) — Chinese President Xi Jinping said China and the United States should be partners rather than rivals during a high-level meeting with US President Donald Trump in Beijing on Thursday.
Speaking during the bilateral talks, Xi emphasized the importance of cooperation between the world’s two largest economies amid growing global tensions.
In response, Trump praised Xi as a “great leader” and said relations between the two superpowers would become “better than ever.”
Ahead of the meeting, Xi welcomed Trump on a red carpet outside the Great Hall of the People, where the two leaders shook hands before an official guard of honor by members of the military.
Despite the positive tone, several sensitive issues are expected to be discussed during the talks, including tariffs, technological competition, the Iran conflict, and the Taiwan issue.
Trump is accompanied in Beijing by several leading US technology executives, including Elon Musk and Jensen Huang.
This marks Trump’s first visit to China as US president since 2017. The two leaders are also scheduled to attend a state banquet later in the day.
