Chennai, May 10 (V7N)- A new chapter is set to begin in Tamil Nadu politics today as South Indian megastar-turned-politician Vijay is scheduled to take oath as the Chief Minister of the southern Indian state.
The grand oath-taking ceremony will be held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday morning at 10:00am, where thousands of supporters and political leaders are expected to gather.
Political analysts say the event marks the end of the decades-long dominance of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in Tamil Nadu politics.
Leader of the Opposition in India’s Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is also expected to attend the ceremony at the invitation of Vijay and the newly formed alliance government. Political observers believe the Congress leader’s presence signals strong support for Vijay’s administration from alliance partners.
According to sources, Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi formally invited Vijay to form the government on Saturday night. Alongside Vijay, nine cabinet ministers are also expected to take oath today.
Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), reportedly emerged as the single largest party by securing 108 seats in the assembly elections. Later, the party formed a majority coalition with support from Congress, VCK, CPI, CPI(M), and IUML.
Meanwhile, Chennai has turned festive ahead of the ceremony, with roads decorated in yellow and maroon colors associated with TVK. Thousands of fans and supporters have gathered around the stadium to witness the silver screen icon take charge as what supporters describe as a “people’s leader.”
Security has been tightened across the city to manage the massive crowd expected at the historic event.
